Sweet Potato Pie

I thought nothing could be worse than all of the lives lost to the covid-19 pandemic and the way it has changed the way we live.  But it could and did get worse.

Even as some of the lockdown restrictions were being lifted, we had the tragic death of George Floyd.  This has caused more grief and sadness for African Americans.  Looking at the news, it appears his tragic death has affected the whole world.

Hopefully, we as Americans can come together and provide a better and safer community for African Americans.

Food52 has compiled a list of cookbooks authored by African-American and I am including it here.  Seems I’m alway buying cookbooks so it is a good list to have on hand.  I bought Carly Hall’s Soul Food. has provided a list of Black-Owned bookstores that we can support right now.

Sweet Potato Pie is a traditional dessert that originated in the Southern United States.  Very often it is served for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners.  The sweet potato pie was very likely developed by African Americans.  Sweet potato pie is similar in color and flavor to pumpkin pie.

For this recipe, I peeled the potatoes, cut into chunks, and then boiled them until tender.  Other recipes have you bake the potatoes in their skins and then remove the pulp, which is probably the easiest process.

Sweet Potato Pie

1 unbaked 9-inch deep-dish pie shell

2 cups mashed sweet potatoes (about 1 1/2 lbs)
1 cup packed dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
pinch of salt
2 large eggs
1 cup half and half

Egg Wash

1 large egg beaten with 1 tablespoon milk

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

In a large mixing bowl, blend together the mashed sweet potato, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger and salt.   Beat in the eggs.  Gradually mix in the half and half.  Pour filling into prepared pie crust.

Brush the edges of the crust with the egg wash.  Bake 50-60 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.  If crust is browning too quickly, cover edges with 2 inch strip of aluminum foil.

Cool completely.  Serve with whipped cream, if desired.  Store leftovers in the fridge.
